Abstract
PURPOSE: To effect continuous operation of self-ignited combustion by maintaining active thermal circumstance, necessary for self-ignition, in stable condition until end of compression stroke of an engine.
CONSTITUTION: Scavenging air ports 14aW14e are connected to each other by a scavenging air plenum 15 around outside of a cylinder-block 3. Cross-sectional area of the scavenging air plenum 15 becomes bigger gradually when the section approaches from the port 14a to the port 14e. A slow-speed passage 16 is provided beside the port 14e and a mixture intake port 17 is provided at the tip portion of the slow-speed passage 16. Amount of remaining ignited gas per one cycle is increased by an amount corresponding to that of ignited gas flown into the scavenging air plenum 15 and the slow-speed passage 16, and the increased ignited gas is mixed with mixture in the slow-speed passage 16, thereby, pre-heating of the mixture becomes to be effected.
