Abstract

199,682. Adlam, E. G., and Seton, G. N. Feb. 23, 1923. Bottling. - In machines for bottling liquids under pressure and of the type in which the filling-head is provided with a rotary plug-cock, the cock during filling is held tightly in its casing by means of the gas pressure in the reservoir or tank; separate pressure and return pressure equalizing tubes are used and the cock is provided with three diametral apertures aligning with through-way gas and liquid ports in the filling-head. The pipe E, Fig. 1, which establishes communication between the gas or air pressure space in the tank A and the bottle D to be filled, communicates by a port B<1> in the filling-head B and an elongated slot or port C<1> with a chamber C<2> in the head of the plug-cock C. The chamber C<2> communicates by an offset port C<3>, Fig. 2, a second port B<2> in the head, and a lateral port B<3> with an annular space F<2> between the liquid-discharge pipe F and a concentrically-arranged tube F<1>. The space F<2> is in open communication with the pipe F through one or more apertures F<3> therein, and the counter-pressure from the tank passes to the bottle through the pipe F and nozzle or extension F<4>. The space F<2> is also open through the lateral port B<3> with a port H<1> in the head communicating through a through-way port C<4> in the cock with the return pressure pipe H in the tank. On turning the cock, the bottle is first placed in communication with the gas space of the tank, then this communication is shut off and the liquid-discharge port C<5> in the cock and the pipe H are simultaneously opened to the bottle. In the event of a bottle breaking, a floating ball J, which is preferably a rubber-covered cork ball, closes the liquid port B<4>. The ball is normally held in position by an adjustable pronged holder- K mounted in a bridge-piece K<1> seated in the walls of a recess B<6> in the filling-head. A light spring C<6> normally holds the cock C in its casing in the head. The bottle is held against a rubber- or other gasket G in a recess in a cap G<1> removably secured to the lower end of the filling-head. Two caps G<1> are shown, one screwed to the head' and the other below it and having a ring or projections G<2> to bear against the upper gasket, to adapt the head to bottles of different sizes.
