Abstract
532,530. Delivering measured quantities of liquid. NON-DRIP MEASURE CO., Ltd., BERWICK, F. W., and BERWICK, A. G. July 24, 1939, Nos. 21452, 21453 and 21455. [Class 106 (v)] [Also in Group XXIX] A device for delivering measured quantities of liquid is formed of parts easily disassembled for cleaning and the measuring chamber is sealed at the top and bottom by elements out of contact with the liquid. The device shown comprises a glass, stainless steel or synthetic resin measuring chamber 1 formed at its upper edge with a lip 2 secured by a threaded ring 5 to a cover 6 fitted with a sealing washer 7 in an annular groove out of contact with the liquid. The cover 6 is fitted with a liquid inlet tube 17 surrounded by a cork plug 47 fitting in the neck of a bottle. The bottom of the measuring chamber is apertured to receive a threaded sleeve 8 secured by a locking sleeve 33 and formed with a flange 9 similarly fitted with a sealing washer 10. An operating member constructed substantially according to Specification 455,266 and movable axially in the sleeve 8 comprises upper and lower members 12, 14 threaded together, the upper member carrying a spring-pressed valve 15 and the lower member being formed with a discharge passage 41 and provided with detachable operating arms 40. The upward pressure of a receptacle on the arms 40 first closes the liquid inlet 16 to the measuring chamber by the valve 15, next opens a valve 22 in the cover 6 to admit air to the measuring chamber by the engagement of the flanged head 20 of the member 12 with its fluted valve stem 21, and finally opens ports 28 in the member 14 for the passage of the liquid in the measuring chamber to the discharge passage 41. The arms 40 may be attached to a thimble 42 movable within limits on the member 14 and formed with a discharge passage 43 communicating with an enlargement 44 into which liquid remaining in the passage 41 collects to be ejected on the next discharge operation. The operating member is normally held with a sealing washer 30 in contact with the edge of a recess 32 in the sleeve 8 by a spring 35 arranged between a sleeve 34 on the member 14 and a ring 36 below the sleeve 8. An indiarubber ring 38 is arranged between chamfered surfaces on the ring 36 and sleeve 8 to prevent leakage. A vertical partition 49 is preferably provided in the tube 17 to prevent air lock and the valve 15 may be formed with a vertical pin 51 to break up bubble formations. Alternatively the valve 15 may have a flat top and carry the vertical partition. The bottle may be carried in a supoort described in Specification 532,531, [Group XIV]. Fig. 8 shows alternative drip-preventing means consisting of a thimble 55 slidable on the operating member and carrying a valve element 61 normally resting on the base of the operating member; when the thimble is raised the liquid passes through ports 59 to the discharge passage 58.
