Abstract

848,998. Dispensing measured quantities of liquids. WALDHERR, W. Nov. 21, 1956 [Dec. 7, 1955], No. 16696/60. Divided out of 848,997. Class 106(5) [Also in Group XXVIII] A device for dispensing measured quantities of pressurized fluid comprises a closure member 3 which can be rolled at 4 round the neck of a glass or metal container 1, a measuring chamber 27 within a tubular member 6 and a tubular valve member 9 having a valve disc 22 with upward and downward projections 29, 30 of cruciform section fitted at the lower end. Normally a spring 10 pressing the valve disc against a resilient sleeve 33 also raises the tube 9 so that a seal 21 is maintained against a flanged ring 18 and the metering chamber 27 is filled by fluid passing through a gap between the lower face of the valve disc and the upper face 32 of a resilient sleeve 31 and through grooves in the periphery of the valve disc. When the spray head 24 and tube 9 are pushed down, the engagement of the valve disc with the face 32 seals off the metering chamber from the container, the sealing ring 21 disengages from the flange 18 and an opening 13 moves below a sealing ring 17 to allow the contents of the chamber to escape through the opening 13. The sealing rings 17 and 21 may be combined in a single ring and the stroke of the tube 9 is then increased so that the opening 13 can come below the combined ring. All three rings 17, 21 and 23 can be combined in a single ring and the opening 13 is then omitted, emptying of the chamber taking place through a second opening 14. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the tube 9 has a single opening 14 and a valve disc 22 bears through a sealing ring 37 on the bottom of the tube and also on the bottom face of a ring 38 having downward extensions 39. In the position shown, fluid flows past the gap 32 below the valve disc and through the slots formed by the extensions 39 into the measuring chamber 27. When the spray head 24 is depressed, the valve disc bears on a resilient sleeve 31 to seal off the measuring chamber from the container and at the same time the contents of the chamber escape above the valve disc through the gap 41 and through the opening 14. The top of the measuring chamber is formed by a diaphragm 211 clamped at its centre between a flange 20 and collar 36 on the tube 9. Filling the container-If the container is filled with a liquid which becomes a gas at room temperature, the gas in liquid form is simply poured into the container before the closure member is joined to it. However, if the container is first partially filled with a liquid and then a gas under pressure is added to the container, a non- return valve is provided in the form of a resilient sleeve 33 fitted over the opening. Before fitting the spray head, the tube 9 can be connected to a pressure source and the gas passing down the tube and through the opening will force the sleeve away from the tube and also force down the valve disc, so that the gas can pass through the metering chamber into the container. A device for filling the container comprises a valve 79, Fig. 9, connected to a piston 71 and a sealing member 76 of resilient material such as rubber for gripping a tube 78 extending from the container. When the container is moved upwardly into engagement with a housing 77 round the sealing member 76, the housing is raised to the position shown against the action of a spring 81 and when pressure fluid is supplied through a pipe 70 it acts on the piston 71 to move the valve 79 down against the action of a spring 72 until a diametral bore at the bottom of an axial passage 731 clears an internal flange 85. Fluid then passes down the axial bore 731 and through the diametral bore into the container and also acts on the sealing member 76 so that it grips the tube 78 more tightly.
