Abstract

198,573. Blakeborough, R. A., and Tart, H. June 22, 1922. Wedging or jamming; scrapers.-In a sluice valve, the two valve discs are forced against their seats by wedges introduced through openings in the casing. The screwed spindle c works in a nut e<x> held loosely in the upper end of a sleeve e which operates the valve discs f by means of flanges e<1>. Flat bow springs g are fitted to press the discs against their seats, and the discs are provided with sharp edges f<2> to remove deposits of tar, &c. when the valve is used in coal-gas plant. Lugs i are arranged in opposed pairs towards the upper ends of the discs, and engage with central double-faced wedges j to press the discs against their seats, a similar wedge k is arranged at the lower edges of the discs. The wedges j are inserted through openings a<2> in the casing and are adjustable vertically by means of set-screws l. The wedges are held in position by bolts j<3>, and are thus adjustable from outside the casing. The wedge k is similarly adjustable by a screw m.
