Presses, mechanical.-Relates to presses of the type in which a screw a, Fig. 1, works through a fixed nut and is fitted at its upper end with a disc b adapted' to be engaged by friction discs d, c, and consists in the provision of primary means in the form of a pneumatic cushion or dash-pot for holding the screw in its arrested position. As shown, a cross-bar f, Fig. 2, supported above the disc b, carries a cylinder g' within which works a piston h faced with friction material m adapted to be engaged by the disc in its ascent; the cylinder g<1> being furnished with a hole a<2> or valve to constitute a dash-pot. The disc is held by springs k encircling rods i carried by lugs or extensions h<2> of the piston h.
