Stationary batch-mixers with rotary stirrers.- A mixing and grinding mill for paint &c., either in the dry or liquid form, comprises a container with an inclined bottom and a mixing and propelling device comprising helically-twisted blades mounted on a horizontal axis; the paint &c. is discharged through adjustable ports to an extension on which is mounted a grinder. The parts are jacketed for heating or cooling and the grinder shaft passes through the hollow mixing shaft. As shown the container 1 comprises a pair of superposed chambers each having a sloping bottom and fitted with horizontally arranged mixing devices 5. The upper chamber is provided with exits 39, 40, and the material is extended from the lower chamber through ports 12 in the end; the ports being opened and closed by moving an apertured plate 13. The grinder comprises a grinding surface 16 formed on an extension 15 to the container, a second surface being formed on a number 32 adjustably mounted thereon. The grinder 33 is adjustably mounted on a hollow shaft 18 passing through the shaft of the lower mixer, and is fitted with a pair of grinding surfaces; the material is discharged into a hopper 19. The grinder shaft 18 is fitted with a stop 24 bearing against a pivoted member 23, on the removal of which the shaft may be moved longitudinally to allow the grinder to be cleared of any foreign body in the material. The container is provided with a jacket 44, and the extension 15 and part 32 are hollow to allow the circulating of heating or cooling medium. In a modification, the container is provided with one mixing chamber and blade, and grinding is effected by the rotation of the member 32 against the surface 16, the separate grinder 33 being eliminated.
