Abstract

195,737. Durrant, A. A. M., and London General Omnibus Co., Ltd. Jan. 4, 1922. Fluid-actuated valves. - Apparatus tor supplying an anti-detonating agent to the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine when the compression therein exceeds a certain amount, comprises a movable member, such as a piston or a flexible diaphragm 30, which is subjected to the action of the vacuum existing in the induction pipe so that a valve 23 is opened by a spring 36, to admit the anti-detonating agent, when the vacuum is small owing to a full opening of the throttle. The valve 23 is shown as a conical lift valve engaging annular seats 24, 25, and also inclined seats formed on a central partition 27, and controls a passage 19 connected to a pipe 21 leading to the air intake of the carburettor 12. The space above the diaphragm 30 is open to atmosphere, and the space below is connected by a passage 40 with the induction pipe 10 on the cylinder side of the throttle 11. The diaphragm may be replaced by a collapsable corrugated bellows, for example of spun copper.
