Brakes, arrangement and disposition of, and braking.-In a compound vehicle comprising a tractor and a two-wheeled trailer partly supported by the tractor, the braking effort applied to the wheels of the trailer is greater than that applied to the rear wheels of the tractor and manual operation of the tractor brakes sets in operation a relay mechanism for braking the trailer wheels. A brake pedal or hand lever operated by the driver is adapted to apply brakes to the tractor wheels and also to the, trailer wheels by means of a flexible connection or pin passing through the pivot pin which connects the tractor and trailer, the effective leverage of the trailer connection being greater than the tractor operating gear. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the pedal g applies the tractor brakes and also operates a lever W which clutches a drum V to the propeller shaft V<1> thereby winding up a cable o which is led to the trailer brakes through the pivot pin.
