Abstract

239,141. Jett, G. C. July 3, 1924. Differential braking for steering.-Relates to steering and braking mechanism for endless-track vehicles of the kind in which driving or sprocket wheels 24 on each side of the vehicle are independently braked for steering by the rocking of a centrally-pivoted lever 86, or are braked together for stopping the vehicle, and comprises a connection, adjustable in length, between the lever 86 and one of the brakes whereby the vehicle braking is effected. The invention may be applied to a vehicle converted from the wheeled to the endless-track type, in which case the steering hand-wheel and the rocker shaft actuated thereby (not shown) are retained, this rocker shaft being connected by a link 92 to the lever 86. One end of the lever 86 is connected directly to one of the brakes 93, and the other end is connected to the other brake 94 by a link 107 and a two-part arm 108, 109, these parts being connected by a quadrant and pawl. Ordinarily, when the steering-wheel is rotated for steering, one brake is applied and the other is, left free, while to apply both brakes, the steering-wheel is rotated and the arm 108 is moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, thus lengthening the connection between the lever 86 and the brake 94.
