Force-transmitting mechanism.-In vehicles. with three or more axles, two of which are driving axles having elastic torque reaction gear, the hand-brake mechanism is so arranged that when this brake is operative the return movement of the torque reaction gear as the vehicle comes to a standstill tends to reduce the load on the brake connections and thus avoid locking the hand-brake in the " on " position. In the construction shown applied to a vehicle having two rear driving axles a, b the brake cams are situated rearwardlv of the rear axle band forwardlv of the foward axle a, and' are operated by arms c', c respectively connected by a push-rod e<1> and a tension rod e to a common operating means comprising a lever j actuated by the hand lever n. The lever j is pivoted' at u to a clip or bracket r clamped on a frame cross-member i receiving the reaction from the torque members which may incorporate coil compression springs and are connected to the axle casings. When the hand brake is applied the brake cams are rotated in the opposite direction to that in which the wheels are rotating, with the result that the rotary movement of the axle casings due to the brakes and to the yielding of the torque gear tends to increase the braking pressure, while when the vehicle stops the return movement of the casings, due to the reaction of the torque gear, releases the undue pressure on the brake connections so that the brake can readily be released by hand.
