Abstract

251,845. Maxted, H. P., and Alford &. Alder (Engineers), Ltd. Sept, 25, 1925. Force-transmitting mechanism; compensating for wear.-The cross-shaft for operating the brakes on a pair of vehicle wheels is mounted on the axle so as to prevent interference with the braking action by the springing of the vehicle particularly in the case of front wheel brakes in which a differential braking action as between the brakes on the two wheels is effected during steering. Means are described for permitting relative angular adjustment of the cross-shaft in relation to the brake-operating shafts proper actuated thereby. The cross-shaft 8 mounted by brackets 9 on the axle 2 carries a. pair of arms 7 each of which is connected by a link 6 to an arm 5 on an operating shaft 3 of the brake. Each shaft 3 is connected by a universal joint. 4 to the brakeoperating means, the joints 4 being displaced from the wheel pivot axis so that the brakes automatically tighten or slacken with the deflection of the wheels. The link 6 is screw-threaded into a pin 12 on the arm 7 ,and carries a thrust collar 13 for engagement with a pin 14 on the arm 5 through which the rod 6 passes. The effective length of the link 6 and thus the angular relationship of the shafts 3, 8 can thus be adjusted by turning the head 11, the collar 13 being grooved transversely for engagement with the pin 14 so as to lock the link in the adjusted position. The shaft 8 may be disposed on the rear side of the axle 2 instead of tube front as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which case the connections for the link 6 are modified so that it acts in tension.
