Abstract
222,418. Royce, F. H. March 28, 1923. Actuated by running axle or shaft; hand and foot actuation; force-transmitting mechanism.- In brake mechanism for road vehicles of the kind comprising a rock shaft connected to a brake and adapted to be actuated by a running shaft of the vehicle through a friction clutch device but which is effective only during forward travel of the vehicle, a stop is provided to limit the reverse movement of the driven member of the clutch so that interference with the direct application of the brake during backward travel of the vehicle is prevented and a braking effect is obtained from the clutch itself. The stop is shown as embodied in the brake mechanism described in Specification 222,162 in which the actuation of a single hand lever or pedal is arranged to apply brakes directly to one pair of wheels of a vehicle and to engage a friction clutch which applies brakes to the other pair of wheels. The plate c' keyed on the driven shaft c of the clutch device is provided with dogs c<8> which project between corresponding dogs on a fixed part c<1>. When an arm e<5> freely mounted upon the shaft c is actuated, spiral serrations on the sleeve e<5a> which carries this arm engages corresponding serrations on the boss e of an arm e<3> connected to the brakes on the front wheels. The arm c<3> is thus turned to apply these brakes and the sleeve e<5a> is also displaced longitudinally on the shaft c thereby effecting the engagement of the clutch discs c<6> by means of the rod f<3> and presser member f. The driven shaft c of the clutch is thus turned and if the vehicle is travelling forwardly applies the brakes on the rear wheels by the arm d. If the vehicle is travelling rearwardly the rotational movement of the shaft c is arrested by the dogs c<8> and the braking effect of the clutch discs is still added to that of the brakes applied directly by the driver.
