Abstract

561,234. Controlling motor vehicles. A.C.E. MACHINERY, Ltd., and EVANS, P. N., June 2, 1942, No. 7470. [Class 79 (v)] The reversing gear of a vehicle is controlled by a pedal d mounted on a shaft f and normally held in the central or neutral position by a spring p, the pedal being rocked forwardly to give a forward drive to the vehicle and rearwardly to give a reverse drive. In the construction shown, the pedal is formed with toe and heel plates q, rand is connected by a link h to a sector i fixed to a shaft k having an eccentric j controlling the reversing gear (not shown). The sector is normally. held in the neutral position shown by means of a spring p connecting the ends of two arms l, m which bear against the sides of the sector and are pivoted at n, o respectively. Thus movement of the sector in either direction stretches the spring p which then tends to return the sector and the pedal to the neutral position. The reversing gear may be a friction gear as described in Specifications 561,233 and 561,235, ' [Group XXIV]. When the pedal is released and returns to its neutral position, a brake may be automatically applied to the driving gear as described in Specifications 561,236 and 561,238, [both in Group XXXIV], so that the vehi.cle.is automatically brought to a standstill. The engine c drives the rear wheels e through the reversing gear controlled by the pedal d. Front wheel brakes may be provided and controlled by a separate pedal.
