Locking by frictional and positive detents.- Relates to brakes for hand-propelled vehicles which are applied automatically when the handle of the vehicle is released and are released when pressure is applied to the handle for propelling the vehicle. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the handle f of a perambulator is mounted by links 8 upon the usual rods 21 attached to the body or frame of the vehicle. One end of a Bowden cable 6 is attached to a pin 10 on one of the links 8 and the other end to a spring-actuated plunger mounted upon the wheel axle and adapted to be projected by the spring between the spokes of the wheel. With the handle in the position f the plunger is engaged. If the handle is pushed or pulled to move the vehicle in one direction or the other, the handle swings into position e, or g, and in either case the plunger is disengaged from the wheel. Limiting stops 11 for the handle are provided on a fixed part 8<a>. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the handle 20 slides on the support 21 and has fixed thereto a cross-piece 26 accommodated in slots 22 in the support 21. The cable and casing of the Bowden member 6 are connected at one end to discs 24, 25 and at the other end to a stop 27, Fig. 4, and a pawl 13 urged by the spring 16 into engagement with a notched disc 17 secured to the vehicle wheel. When the handle is in the released position i the pawl is engaged and the discs 24, 25 contact with stops 23, 23<a> on the member 21. If the handle is pushed towards the position h, the casing of the Bowden cable 6 exerts a thrust upon the pawl and effects its disengagement from the disc 17. If the handle is pulled in the direction i, j the cable is tightened which allows the casing to disengage the pawl as before. According to the Provisional Specification the brake may be controlled by a lever pivoted upon the usual rigid handle and a coil or band brake may be used.
