Abstract

11,301. Thompson, D. J. Nov. 11. Skid; hand and foot actuation.-In skid brakes for motor-cars in which the brake shoes are dropped quickly to the ground by releasing a foot-lever, the braking pressure being then applied by a hand-lever acting through ratchet apparatus, means are provided whereby the shoes may be raised six or eight inches off the ground when released, and the axle is locked to the body as to relative vertical movement when the brakes are applied. The foot-lever C is connected by a rod C' and arm C<2> to the outer shaft E of two concentric shafts E, F, and a segment P on the shaft E is connected by a wire rope Y, Figs. 3 and 4, to a disk Q secured to a segment R, which is of twice the radius of the disk and is connected by a rope Z with a guide K in which slides the ratchet I carrying the brake shoe A. The foot-lever is released to allow the shoe to fall to the ground, by depressing a spring catch X, Fig. 1, on the hand-lever D. The hand-lever is connected by a rod D<1> and arm D<2> to the shaft F, which carries an arm G provided with a pawl H, which engages with the ratchet I to apply the braking pressure when the hand-lever is pulled backwards. To release the brakes, the hand-lever is moved forwards, and the footlever is then pushed forwards to raise the shoes. When the braking pressure is applied by the hand-lever, a spring-pressed pawl L, Figs. 3 and 4, pivoted to the axle is released by a tail-piece 0 on the arm G and engages with a rack M on the body, so as to lock the body to the axle, thus ensuring that the wheels will be raised off the ground. The pawl L is again disengaged by the tail-piece 0, when the braking pressure is removed. The ratchet guide K is pivoted to the shaft F to allow fore - and - aft movement of the shoe A. The shoe is connected to the body by wire stays B, and is maintained horizontal by a spring S.
