Abstract
192,944. Woodall, Duckham, & Jones (1920), Ltd., and Morgan, J. S. March 1, 1922. Oxygen is separated from air by absorption in a solution or suspension of haemoglobin which is prevented from putrefaction by being maintained at about O‹ C. or at a temperature just lower than that at which the haemoglobin coagulates, in presence or absence of a protective colloid. According to an example haemoglobin is circulated counter-current wise to air in an absorption tower maintained at about O‹C. and then passed through a vessel where it is subjected to reduced pressure. Another example carries out the absorption at 1.5 atmospheres and 57‹ C. To avoid frothing while the oxygen is being withdrawn, the solution may be forced into the low pressure vessel in the form of a fine spray. The Provisional Specification refers to the prevention of putrefaction by addition of a germicide, such as hypochlorite, formaldehyde or a mercuric salt.
