Abstract

Cumene is oxidized in liquid phase to cumene hydroperoxide with elemental oxygen in presence of solid sodium carbonate at a temperature above 90 DEG C. and below about 130 C. The amount of carbonate used is preferably 0.5-25g. per 100 cc. of cumene; it is removed from the product by decantation and washing, and may be regenerated by washing with acetone and then water. An example is given of the process. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 630,286.
