Abstract

Molecular oxygen is in the proportion 0.01-3 wt. % of monomer. Catalyst may be derived from reaction of vinyl chloride (I) and oxygen. Very good yields are obtained of heat resistant polymer giving films free from 'fish eyes' which is not the case with suspension polymers of (I) with the usual peroxide catalyst. Proportion of (I) in water is 10-60% (pref. 20-50%) at pH 1.0-7.5 and at 65-80 degrees. Oxygen in the form of air or commercial oxygen may be used by pressurising it in the polymerisation vessel. Hydroxy ethyl cellulose, 0.01-0.5% (pref. 0.04-0.25%) as colloid protector is included. Up to 10 wt. % of an unsaturated olefinic monomer may be copolymerised with (I). Emulsifying agents may also be used in the proportion 0.001-1 wt. %.
