Abstract

Pump systems.-In a pumping system a liquid pump and a gas pump are mounted upon a tank casing and withdraw liquid and gas through openings in the casing, the liquid being discharged a boiler and the gas to a separator. The tank A is divided by the partition 50 into a separator chamber 9 and a chamber 5 which contains the returns conveyed by the pipe 8. The rotor 2 of the centrifugal water pump and the rotor 1 of the air pump are mounted on the bronze shaft 49 rigidly secured to the shaft 51 of the motor D. The volute housing 33 of the centrifugal pump is seated round the opening 52 in the casing and the pump draws its water .through the port 6 which is provided with a shield 16 to maintain a definite head of water for priming purposes. A lower port 17 supplies priming and make-up water to the air pump. Intake and exhaust passages 7, 10 are connected to the air pump by passages in a plate 32 and the ends of the passages are covered by baffles 15, 15<a> to ensure the intake and exhaust of air at the top of the chambers 9, 5. The port plate 41 of the air pump is seated in a recess in the plate 32 or the plates may be made integral with each other. The casing 31 is bolted to the plates 41, 32 and has a sleeve 56 with a packing gland 57. The stationary parts of the two pumps are fastened directly to the tank which is secured to the base 14 of the motor D. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the port plate 41<a> and the passage plate 32<a> are mounted on the motor side of the pump instead of on the tank side. The tank extends below the intake of the water pump to form a settling pocket. Each end of the motor shaft is provided with a collar 20 engaging one end of a bushing 19 at each bearing to take end thrust. Threaded collars. 24 are used to adjust the position of the bushings 19 and thereby to adjust the clearances between the pump rotors and the casings. The collars may be locked by a spring clip engaging notches in the collars or a lock washer may be used. The unit may operate continuously or be controlled for intermittent operation by an automatic switch.
