Abstract
289,332. Jennings, I. C. Sept. 26, 1927. Pumping - machines; starting, facilitating.-The casing of a self priming centrifugal pump contains a separate chamber used as a storaae chamber for the liquid supplied to a liquid-ring pump which withdraws air from the centrifugal lamp. The impeller C of the centrifugal pump is enclosed in a casing a, b the part a being attached to the body A and the part b being attached to the water-head B. The body A carries the inlet 10 and outlet 13. The impeller shaft 14 passes through a stuffing-box 15 which has a flange 18 attached to the body A by bolts 19, the bolt holes in the flange being large enough to permit the shaft to be properly centred. Spring-pressed bearing rings 22, 23 are arranged between the ends of the impeller and the casing parts a, b thereby providing water seals on each side of the impeller. A partition 26, Fig. 3, is arranged between the water-head B and its inner part b to form a chamber D which communicates through the passage 29 with the rent pipe E. The liquid-ring pump F is carried by the waterhead B and has a port plate 310, Fig. 7, divided by a partition 32 to form inlet and outlet chambers 33, 34, proper passages and outlets being provided to obtain the necessary flow of liquid. The rotor 42 is keyed to the shaft 14 and rotates in an elliptical casing. A spring- pressed seal is employed to close the aperture in the plate B through which the shaft passes. When the motor is started the liquid-ring pump F sucks air through the passage 35, Fig. 7, and expels it through the passage 37 and the vent pipe E. This exhausts air from the centrifugal pump and water is drawn in to enable the pump to start. Any water delivered by the liquid-ring pump F will drop into the chamber D and will serve as a priming means for this pump when it is re-started. Specification 268,197 is referred to.
