Abstract
891,039. Viscosity pumps. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 2, 1960 [May 22, 1959], No. 17494/59. Class 110 (1). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a viscosity pump, a journal 32 and a housing 33 have defined between them, at the central region of the assembly, interrupted annular grooves 34, and means for feeding gas to one end of the grooves and means for exhausting gas from the other end of the grooves are provided. The pump may have a stationary shaft with a rotatable housing or have a rotatable shaft in a stationary housing. The grooves, which are formed in the stationary member of the pump, are connected to an inlet pipe 40 via a manifold 39, pipes 38, passages 37 and holes 36 and are connected to an outlet pipe 45 via a manifold 44, pipes 43, passages 42 and holes 41. The assembly is totally enclosed in a easing 46, through which passes the inlet and outlet pipes 40, 45 and the housing 33 is rotated by a motor stator 51, having windings 52. In a modification an inlet port is provided in the casing 46 and the pipes 38, 40 and manifold 39 are removed. The localised points of increased pressure at lands 35 suppress whirl. Specification 888,155 is referred to.
