Abstract

4387. Hollingworth, E., [Crompton & Knowles Loom Works]. March 20. Weft-replenishing mechanism.-A weft-feeler device has a detecting-point 16, Figs. 3 and 6, which normally penetrates the weft on the cop at the beat-up, but, on substantial exhaustion of the weft, is moved relative to its slide 10 against the action of a spring 18 and releases a valve 20, thus admitting air to a normally collapsed pneumatic device controlling the weftreplenishing mechanism. The pneumatic device, which is mounted on the slide 10, normally urged rearwards in guides by means of a spring 12, comprises a disk 30 and a flexible diaphragm 31, Fig. 5, connected to a casting 32 having a rod 33 moving in a fixed guide 34, Fig. 3. The detecting-point 16 is on a rod 15 carrying at its other end a valve 20 adapted to close a hole 37 between the disk and the diaphragm. When the lay moves back, the slide 10 is urged rearwards by the spring 12 until the casting 32 is forced against the bearing 34, thus collapsing the diaphragm. When the lay beats up, the slide is moved forwards and, normally, the diaphragm and disk, being collapsed, remain collapsed and move together, since the valve 20 prevents ingress of air; but, when the valve 20 is operated, the diaphragm assumes the position shown in Fig. 5, so that a spring-actuated lever 40 controlling the weft-replenishing mechanism is not moved and weft-replenishment then takes place. In a modified form of pneumatic device, the diaphragm and disk are replaced by a piston and cylinder.
