Abstract

19,275. Hollingworth, E., [Crompton & Knowles Loom Works]. Sept. 7. Looms, protecting selvages in ; weft tension, regulating apart from shuttles in shuttle looms.-Relates to means for drawing tight, on the beat-up, the strong and thick filling, sometimes with a wire centre, used in looms for weaving heavy belting, matting, &c., in order to give a good selvage to the fabric. A stand 5 is mounted on the back of the lay, and to it is pivoted a gripping-lever 6 provided with a central longitudinal opening, and pivotally connected by a link 7 to an arm 8<1> on the filling- finger 8, moving in a vertical slot in the lay. A rod 12, passing loosely through a swivel bearing 13 on a stationary stud 14, and provided with collars 15, 17 secured in position by set-screws, and with a spring 16, engages a projection 6<111> on the gripping-lever 6. When the lay is in its rear position, as shown, the spring 16 is extended, but, as the lay beats up, the spring is compressed and the rod 12 rocks the lever 6, so that, by the link mechanism 7 &c., the finger 8 moves up, engages the filling 11, and moves it forwards on to a projection 10<1> on a plate 10 bolted to the lay, so that it is then gripped between this projection and gripping-surfaces 6<11> on the lever 6. The continued movement of the lay then draws the filling tight. A spring 18, secured to the stand 5 and projection 6<111>, moves back the lever 6 on its pivotal support as the lay moves back.
