Abstract
9486. Wade, W. May 5. Loom take-up motions ; let-off motions ; breast beams ; back-bearers ; checks and striped fabrics; openwork fabrics.-In looms for weaving dress goods having transverse crammed or dense and openwork stripes formed by periodically varying the number of picks inserted, the warps and the cloth pass over back and front bars 1, 2 carried by arms on shafts 8, 11 respectively. Arms 7, 10 on these shafts are connected by rods 6. 9 to the upper and lower arms of a T-shaped lever 5, of which the horizontal arm carries an antifriction roller 12 pressed against a pattern tappet 3 by the action of a spring S. The tappet 3 is rotated in unison with the take-up ratchet-wheel, and controls the positions of the bars 1, 2, which are moved forwards or backwards to cause the fell to be farther from or nearer to the beating-up reed according as the open or the crammed stripes are to be woven. The take-up ratchet-wheel 14 is actuated by long and short throw pawls 13, 15 connected to a lever 16, which is supported and oscillated by a rod 17 extending from a lay-sword 18. When the fell is in its backward position, the horizontal arm of the lever 5 is raised and a finger connected therewith holds the pawl 13 out of action, so that the ratchet-wheel 14 is rotated by the pawl 15 only, and the rate of take-up is slower than when the fell is in its forward position. When the open stripes are being woven, the tension of the warps is relieved. An arm on the shaft 8 is connected by a rod 19 to an auxiliary pivoted lever normally resting on the ordinary weighted lever of the let-off mechanism, and when the bar 1 moves forwards the pivoted lever is raised. The rod 19 may be directly connected to the ordinary weighted lever. To produce dense and open checks, the warp threads for the longitudinal dense stripes are crowded in the reed.
