PICKER-*MOTION FOR LOOIVIS.A
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 739,526, dated September 22, 1903.
`implication filed June 15, 1903.
To @ZZ whom. t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED H. WHATLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picker-Motions for Looms, of which the following is a speciflcation.
This invention has reference to an improve- :o ment in looms, and more particularly to an improvement in picker-motions for looms.
In looms as heretofore constructed the picker-sticks are usually pivotally secured on the outer ends of the rocking rail of the lay l 5 and extend upward through the shuttleboxes. The pickers are secured to the pickersticks, and when the picker-sticks are thrown by the mechanism of the loom in the usual. way the pickers move on aline forming a segzo ment of an arc the center of which is the pivot of the picker-sticks. This motion of the picker-sticks gives an upward and downward movement to the picker in the shuttleboxes and an irregular movement to the shuttle, causing the shuttle to jump and smash the warp-threads in the loom.
The object ov my invention is to prevent bad weaving or smashing of the warp-threads by an irregular vmovement or throw of the 3o shuttle, and I accomplish this object by mechanism controlling the picker-stick, giving to the picker-stick a movement corresponding to the true movement required of the shuttle-that is to say, the picker on the pickerstick now moves on. a straight line drawn lengthwise through the center of the shuttleboxes and the shuttle. 4
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of a mechanism adapted 4o to control the movement of a picker-stick to move the picker on -the picker -stick in a straight line in the shuttle-box, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure l is a front view of a loom with my improvedpicker-motions, showing the pickersticks in their normal positions in full lines and in their inward and outward positions in broken lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of` the pickermotion mechanism detached 5o from the loom, showing the frame supporting sition by the dat springs o3 and c4, secured at Serial No. 161,407. (Nomodel.)
the cam and link for controlling the movement of the picker-stick and the springs holding the picker-stick in its normal position; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken lengthwise through the picker-stick and picker-motion mechanism.
In the drawings, Cz. represents rthe rocking rail, a a the picker-sticks, and d2 a2 the shuttie-boxes, of a loom; The rocking rail extends through bearings in the loom sides and supports the lay of the loom in the usual way, and the picker-sticks are operated by the picking-cones and picker-straps of the loom to throw a.V shuttle from the shuttle-boxes.
My improved picker-motion mechanism is secured on the ends of the rocking rail a by -the frames b b and control the movement of the picker-sticks a' a.
lower outwardly-extending arm b5, forming a support for the link c, pivotally secured to it by the bolt c. The picker-stick arm d has the elongated open recess ct', shapedto receive the lower end ofthe picker-stick. It is pivotally secured in the link c at its lower end by the bolt c2 and held in its normal po- 8o their lower ends to the link c by the bolts c5 c5, as shown in Fig. 2. The adjustable camplate c with the cam-slot e is secured to the arm b2 bythe bolt e2, forminga pivot, and the bolt e3 through the slot b4 in the end of the arm b2. The lower end of the picker-stick is secured in the recess d in the arm Y d by the bolt d? and the boltf, having the headf between the cam-plate e and the arm b2 and carrying the roll f2, working in the cam-slot e in the cam-plate e. As the position of the picker-sticks varies in different looms, the cam-plate e is made adjustable by moving the outer end of the cam-plate upward or downward and securing it in the position re- 95 quired by the tightening of the nut on the bolt e3.
In the operation of my improved pickermotion the shuttle is thrown from the shut- .tlc-box by the picker-stick against the ten- Ico sion of the spring o3, which takes the place of the usual floor-spring. The roll f2 follows in the cam-slot c and raises the picker-stick and link c, as shown in broken lines on the right of Fig. 1. The tension of the spring c3 now returns the picker-stick to its normal or central position. The return blow of the shuttle carries the pickerstick outward against the tension` of the spring c4, acting as a check to neutralize the blow of the shuttle. The roll f2 in the cam-slot raises the pickel'- stick and the link c, as shown in broken lines on the left -of Fig. 1. The link-pivot, the pivot of the picker-stick arm, and the camplate with the cam-slot c are so placed and adjusted as to give to the picker on thepickerstick a straight-line movement in the shuttie-box. v
By the novel construction of the mechanism of the picker-motion the blow is given in a straight line on the shuttle by the picker on the picker-stick, the liability of smashing the warp-threads is eliminated, and a more perfect Weave is attained than has heretofore been done.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a picker-motion for looms, mechanism controlling the picker-stick, consisting of a frame, a link pivotally secured to the frame, an arm pivotally secured to the link and supporting the picker-stick, a plate having a cam-slot adjustably secured to the frame, and a roll on the arm supporting the pickerstick working in the cam-slot in the plate, for the purpose as described.
2. In a picker-motion, mechanism controlling a picker-stick, consisting of a frame secured on the end of the rocking rail of a loom, a link pivotally secured to the frame, an arm pivotally secured to the link, a picker-stick secured in the arm,'a plate having a cam-slot adjust-ably secured to the frame, and a roll on the arm supporting the picker-stick working in the cam-slot in the plate, for the purpose as described.
3. In a picker-motion, mechanism controlling a picker-stick, consisting of a frame secured on the end ,of the rocking rail of a loom, a link pivotall)7 secured to the frame, an arm pivotally secured to the link, a picker-stick secured in the arm, a spring secured to the link and acting on the arm to return the picker-stick to its normal position, a spring secured to the link and acting on the arm as a check to neutralize the blow of the shuttle on the picker-stick, a plate adjustably secured to the frame, a cam-slot in the plate,
and a roll on the arm supporting the pickerstick Working in the cam-slot in thevplate, as described.
'4. In a picker-motion for looms, the combination with the frame b, consisting of the cylindrical body b having the arm b2 with the enlarged end b3 in which is the slot b4,
and the arm b5, of the link c pivotally secured to the arm b5 by the boltc', the picker-stick` arm CZ having the recess d and pivotally se-V cured to the link c by the bolt c2, the iat springs o3 and c4 secured to the link c by the bolts c5 c5, the adjustable cam-plate e with the cam-slot e secured to the arm b2 by the bolt e3 forming a pivot, and the bolt e3 through the slot b4, the picker-stick a. secured in the recess d in the arm d by the bolt d2 and the boltf, having the head f and carrying the roll]c2 working inthe cam-slot e', and means for securing the frame b to the end of the rocking rail of a loom, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALFRED H. WI-IATLEY.
