NARROW-WARE LOOM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPPA H. RYoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Narrow-Ware Looms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to narrow ware looms for weaving tape, ribbon, etc. and particularl to a shuttle smash preventer for looms of t 1e class referred to, to prevent the breakage of the warp threads, or injury to the goods, when the shuttles remain in the shed, on the forward movement of the lay, by reason of the breaking of the straps which operate the shuttle rack bars, or for any other reason.
In case anything happens it is necessary to stop the loom immediately, in whatever position the shuttles may be, and without waiting for them to move the whole distance of their travel.
The object of my invention is to provide a smash preventer of simple and inexpensive construction, which may be applied to and combined with the ordinary parts of a narrow ware loom.
In two shuttle bank narrow ware looms having two sets of swivel shuttles, there are two rack bars for moving the two sets of shuttles, one bar above, and the other below, and to move both bars by one strap there is a wooden connection between the two bars, and said connection moves the same way as the shuttles move.
In my improvements in two bank narrow Ware looms, I preferably use the connection between the two shuttle rack bars for the stand of a roll, which roll will be in engagement with a curved or cam shaped bar carried by or supported on the protector rod., The protector rod has a dagger thereon to be moved into an inoperative position at each end of the extreme movement or travel of the shuttles, and to be moved into an operative position, to engage a bunter on the breast beam, on the forward movement of the lay, and in every position of the lay on its forward movement, to operate the ordinary shipping levers and shipper rod, and stop the loom, in case the shuttles remain in the shed, or in a osition intermediate their extreme points 0 travel, as the lay moves forward.

In case of narrow ware looms where there is only one bank or row of shuttles, and one rack bar is used to move the shuttles, I preferably connect said rack bar with a swinging arm, or other device, which is moved into a position to engage a hunter on the breastbeam, in any position of the lay on its forward movement, when the shuttles remain in the shed, to put into operation the shipping mechanism and stop the loom.
I have only shown in the drawings detached portions of a narrow ware loom, with my improvements combined therewith, suf-- ficient to enable those skilled in the art to understand the construction and operation thereof.
Referring to the drawingsl-Figure 1 is a front view of one end of the lay of a narrow ware loom, with my improvements applied thereto, looking in the direction of arrow a, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the parts shown in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of arrow b, same figure. Fig. 4 shows a modified construction of the mechanism shown in Fig. 2, for a loom having one bank or set of shuttles, and, Fig. 5 is an end view of the parts shown in Fig. 4, looking in the direction of arrow 0, same figure.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 is a de tached portion of a loom side or end frame, 2 is the lay sword, 3 the lay-beam carrying two banks or sets of shuttles a, in the usual way. At the front of the lay-beam 3 is mounted in suitable bearings a protector rod 5. The protector rod 5 has extending out from the front side thereof a protector dagger 6, in the usual way.
All of the above mentioned parts may be of the usual and well known construction.
I will now describe my improvements.
Fast on the protector rod 5, near the end thereof, are secured by set screws 7, the hubs 8 of two vertically extending arms 8, see Fig. 1. On the upper ends of the arms 8 are secured a curved or cam shaped bar or plate 9, which extends in a plane parallel to the lay beam, and with its inner edge in the path of, and adapted to be engaged by a roll 10 carried on a stud 11 on a bracket 12, secured in this instance to the block 13 which connects the upper rack bar to the lower rack bar, to move the shuttles, through pinions, not shown, in the usual way. The protector rod and at each extreme movement of the shutstolpl 5 has a spring thereon, not shown, in the usual way, to rock said rod and raise the dagger 6.
The movement of the roll 10, with the block 13, in the operation of the loom, on the inner side of the plate 9, controls the rocking motion of the protector rod 5 to vary the position of the dagger 6 relatively to the hunter 14. The hunter 14 is in this instance loosely supported, to have a longitudinal reciprocating movement in a block or hearing 15, secured to the loom side or end frame, see Fig. 3. A rubber block or cushion 16 is prefer ably contained within said stand 15, to form a cushion surface for the hunter 14, and yieldingly hold it in its forward position. The inner edge of the hunter 14 is provided with a series of notches l4 thereon, to be engaged by the protector dagger 6.
When the protectordagger 6 engages any one of the notches 14 on the hunter 14, as the lay moves forward, it will move back said hunter, against the cushion block 16, and cause a projection 14 011 the hunter 14 to engage a projection 17 on a lever 17 which has a hub 17 loosely mounted on a stud 18 on the stand or hearing 15. The lever 17 is in engagement with the lever 19, which is pivotally mounted on. a stud 20, and connected with the shipper bar 21, and will move said lever 19 and the bar 21, to stop the loom, in the usual way. An arm 22, actuated by a spring 23, engages the lever 19, and acts to hold it in its two opposite positions, in the usual way.
The operation of my improvements above described will be readily understood. by those skilled in the art.
In the normal operation of the loom, when the shuttles have passed through the sheds,
ties, the roll 10 will be in engagement with the bar 9, at one or the other end thereof, as shown in the drawings, so that on the forward movement of the lay, the protector dagger 6 will be held out of engagement with the hunter 14, and the stopping of the loom will be prevented.
In case for any reason the shuttles have not passed through the shed, and are not at the extreme ends of their movement in either direction, on the forward beat of the lay, but are in an intermediate position, then the position of the roll 10 on the plate 9, intermediate the ends of the plate, will allow the rocking of the protector rod 5 and the raising of the dagger 6, so that on the forward movement of the lay, the dagger 6 will engage one of the notches 14 in the hunter 14, and move outwardly said hunter against its cushion stop 16, and through the lever 17, put into operation the shipper mechanism to the loom.

instance, pivotally attached thereto, one end of a link 25; the other end of the link '25 is adiustahly connected by a bolt 26, to an elongated slot 27 in one end of a centrally pivoted lever 27, the hub 27 of which is loosely mounted on a stud 28 secured to the 'lay beam 3. The lever 27 has on its other end, on each edge thereof, a series of notches 27, which are adapted to engage the promounted on-the breast-beam, and. held'thereon to have a reciprocating movement, in'this instance by screws 30 extending through elongated openings 29 in said. slide 29. A cushion or flexible block 31, see Fig. 5, extends within a recess in the slide 29, and forms a yielding cushion therefor. The slide 29 has aside extension or lip 29 thereon, which is adapted to engage a notch on a lever 32, which is pivotally mounted on a stud 33 on the loom side or end frame. The lever 32 is adapted to engage a stud 34 extending up from a loop 34, secured on theshipper bar 35, by a set'screw 36.
The operation of my improvements in narrow ware looms-for one bank or set of shuttles, shown in Figs. 4 and 5 will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. When the shuttles have passed through the shed and are at each extreme end of their movement, the lever 27 will he moved, through the link 25 connected to the rack bar 24, into such a position that the notched edges thereof will not extend into-the path of and engage the projection 29 onthe hunter 29, on the forward movement of the lay, but, in case the shuttles have'not passed-through the shed, and are at some point intermediate the ends of their movement, then the lever 27 a position thatone of the notches 27 thereon will he in the path of and engage the extension 29 on the hunter 29, to move outwardly said hunter androck the lever 32 and through the movement of said lever, move the shipper bar 35 to stop the loom.
The advantages of my improvements will be readily appreciated-by those skilled in the art. They are of simple construction and operation, and adapted-to be appliedto narrow ware looms of any ordinary construction.
It will he understood that the details of construction of my improvements may be varied if desired.

In a smash preventer for a narrow ware loom,the combination with a rack bar for the shuttles, and a hunter to operate the shipping mechanism and stop the loom in case the shuttles remain in the shed, of intermediate connections, comprising the protector rod, a curved or cam-shaped bar or plate connected therewith and extending in a plane parallel to the lay-beam, and a roll to engage said bar or plate, and a dagger on the pro tector rod to engage said hunter.
3. In a smash preventer for a narrow ware loom, the combination with a rack bar for the shuttles, a roll connected with said rack bar,
a curved or cam-shaped bar or plate tobe engaged by said. roll, and connected with the protector rod to control the rocking motion of the protector rod and the dagger thereon, relatively to the hunter, and said dagger, of a hunter loosely supported and having its inner edge provided with a series of notches, and a lever intermediate said hunter and a second lever connected with the shipper bar, and said second lever and shipper bar.
4. In a smash preventer for a narrow ware loom, the combination with a rack bar for the shuttles, connections from said bar to a lever, and said lever having a series of notches thereon, of a hunter, and a lever interme diate said hunter and the shipper bar.
