Abstract
239. H o l l i n g w o r t h, E., [Crompton & Knowles Loom Works]. Jan. 4. Loom weft-replenishing mechanism. - Relates to filling-detector mechanism of the type in which the feelers consist of the movable cores 8 of electro-magnets 10 movable in the arc of a circle. The feelers engage on the beat-up with the filling on the bobbin, and if the filling is exhausted, a ring on the bobbin draws forwards the feeler, which then allows a detecting- lever 13 to be moved behind it by a spring 15, this movement of the lever 13 being communicated by a link 16 &c. to weft-replenishing mechanism. According to this invention, the feelers 8 are all moved forwards into operative position by a lever 27, on the backward movement of the lay, and are kept in this position for a predetermined time, the lever 27 being subsequently freed, so that it may be moved back by a feeler 8 engaging with the filling. The lever 27 is provided with hubs 21, 21<1>, Fig. 5, loosely mounted on studs on a stand 4, and has a downwardly extending arm 23 with a camsurface 23<1> extending into the path of a set-screw 24 on a collar on a longitudinally moving rod, by which the movements of the lever 27 are controlled. A weak balancing-spring 28 acting on a projection 30 above the pivot of the lever 27, and a weak spring 29 acting on a projection below the pivot of the lever 27 to move it forwardly, also control the movements of the lever 27. This lever has a non-magnetized strip 27<1> on its engaging- face opposite the feeler 8, which is in line with the race. The feeler - carrying frame 6 is oscillated vertically by connexion through a rod 7 with the shuttle-box rod as usual. The movement of the lever 27 is limited by the engagement of its stop 27<a> with another stop. In a modification, applicable to four shuttle boxes, a stationary engaging arm 36, Fig. 6, having a curved engaging-surface 36<2>, keeps the feelers 8, which are above the plane of the raceway of the lay, in their outward positions, and positively retains them in their normal positions ; and a slotted plate 40 secured to the arm 36 receives the beaded outer end of a feeler, which is below the raceway and prevents it from dropping out of the electro-magnet 10. The operating-lever 38 for the feeler in line with the raceway acts in a similar manner to the lever 27. The arc-shaped part 6<a1 >of the feeler-carrying frame 6<a> is conceded by an arm 35 and connector 34 to a lever 32, which is rocked by the rod 7. The feelers 8 are provided with spiral grooves which form channels or recesses for dirt &c., so that their peripheral surfaces may be smooth.
