Be it known tint I, BENJAMIN F. Mc- (iliixnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'orcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have 1nvcnted certain new and useful Improvements in Filling-Detector Mechanism for llfeft-Replenishin Looms, of which the following is a sieci cation.
My invention relates to a fillin detector mechanism for weft replenishin ooms, and particularly to a mechanical fil mg detector mechanism havin a feeler, which is prefer ably located on tie end of the lay, at. the magazine end of the loom, and at the rear of the stationary shuttle box at said end of the lay, and which is adapted to enter through an opening in the rear wall of the shuttle box, and throuf'h an opening in the shuttle, to engage the lling on the bobbin in the shuttle, preferably at. every other forward movement of the lay, and on the substantial or practical exhaustion of the filling in the active shuttle, operate mechanism connected with the weftre lenishing mechanism, to cause a fresh bogbin to be supplied to the active shuttle, in place of the subat initially exhausted bohbin, in the usual and well known way.
The object of my invention is to improve upon the lilling detector mechanisms of the class referred to, and more particularly to provide n. filling detector mechanism for weft replenishinw looms, comprising two members, both a n )ted to enter an openin in the shuttle, an en nge the filling, and means to move one o said members rela,- tively to the other member in the direction of the length of the bobbin, and connections l intermediate one of said members and thc weft replcnishing mechanism, to canse a fresh bobbn to he supplied to the active shuttle on the practical or substantial exhaustion of the filling on the hohbin in the active shuttle.
In mi' im|novements as shown and dcscribed herein I provide as one member of my filling detector mechanism, preferably a slide having a reci rocatiug movement., which is moved into t le shuttle in a direction at. right angles lo the axis of the bohlrin to engage the filling on the hohbin und is yieldingly held in contact with the filling. l provide as the second momia-.r of my filling detector mechanism, which is adjacent to the first-mentioned member, refer-ably a second slide which is prefer-ab y supported on the first-mentioned slide, and is moved therewith, and is also moved in the direction of the len h of the bobbin. When the first mentions slide en ges the Elln on the bohhin in the shutt e, 1t depresses t e filling and causes the second mentioned slide, by its engagement with the filling, to be held in its inoperative position, but when the filling on the bohbin is practically or substantially exhausted, the few levers of filling romaining on the bobbin will not be depressed sufficiently to prevent the transversely moving slide from o erating, and nn actuating s ring for sai slide will move it. along the fi ling of the bobbin, and put into operation the mechanism which operates the weft replenishing mechanism which may be of any ordinary construction.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction of my improvements, which may be ada ted to be applied to and used on any well own weft replenishin loom having a magazine for bobbins or fil ing carriers, either stationary, or movable.

The sli e 7 has a rearwardly extendin arm 7', carrying at its end a pin 8, to whic is connected one end of a helically coiled contraction spring 9; the other end of said spring t) is connected to a pin 1 0 on a lever 11 having a hub 11' which 1s adjustabl fastened by a set screw 1'2 on a vet-tica y extending shaft 13, which has a bearing in a stand 14 secured to the back wall 2 of the stationary shuttle box. Extending out from the hub 11' of the lever 11 is an arm 11 having pivotally connected thereto a rod head 15', on a rod or connector 15, sce Fig. 6. The other end of the connector 15 has a rod head 15" thereon, which is pivotally connected with one arm of an angle lever 16 having its hub 16' ivotally mounted on a stud 17 secured to e back of the lay, see Fig'. (i. The other arm of the angle lever 1G carries a pin 16" te which is pivotall connected the end of, a connector t8, in t lis instan leading downwardly, and connected with operating parts of the loom, not shown.
Through the connector 18, angle lever 16, connector 15, and arm 1l", the lever 11 is rocked or moved at. regalar predetermined intervals, toward the stationary shuttle box, and through the sprin t), attached to said lever 11, the slide 'i' wil be yieldngly niovul toward and into engagement with thclilling 5 on the bobhin -l in the shuttle 2l. On the underside of the slide 'i' is in this instance a screw 15), scc Figs. 2 and 4, on which is loosely pivoted a three armed lever 20. One arm .10 of said lever 20 has a pin 2i, see Fi 2 and 4, to which is attached one and ov a lighthelically coiled contrae tion spring 32. The curved or cani shaped end 24 of the lever .24 is adapted to engage a pin 2G on the arm :20' of the three armed lever 20. On the three armed lever Q0 is a second arm 20, which extends toward the shuttle box, and has an elongated slot 20 therein, into which extends a pin 27 on the transversely moving slide 2S, see Figs. f2, and 4. The slide 28 extends in this instance upon the underside of the slide 7, and has an elongated slot 28' therethrough, through which extends a stud or pin 2t), sec Fi 5, secured upon the nndeiside ofthe sli e i', and having a head 29 which extends over the edges of the slot 28 and acts to attach the slide :28 to the nuclei'- side of the slide T. A projection 28" on the slide 28 extends in a notch or recess in the underside of the slide T, at one edge thereof. see Figs. '2 and 4, and acts to hold the slide 28 relative to the slide T, so that said slide Q8 may have a transverse motion relative to the slide 7, or in a direction at right angles to the motion of the slide 7 and also in n direction lengthwise of the bohhiii 4 having the filling 5 thereon.
The slide 28 has an engagin end 28* thereon, which is preferably ma c inclined, as shown, and also preferably roughened or corra ated and is adn ted to engave with the fi ling 5 on the bebhin 4, when tie slide 7 is moved toward the bobhin. as shown in Fig. 4. The engaging end of the slide Q8 preferably does not extend to the extreme end of the slide 'i'.

When the bobbin has a sutlicient supply of filling thereon, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and

In a filling detector mechanism for weft repienishing looms, a slide having a' movement in a direction at right angles to the axis of the bobbin in the Shuttle. and adapted to enter an opening` through the Shuttle and to engage the filling on the hobhin, and a second slide mounted on and moving;r with said first mentioned slide` and `adapted to enter an opening!` through the shuttle, and to engage the filling on the bobbin, and also having a movement. in a direction at ri ht. angles to the direction of movement of t e first mentioned slide.

In a. filling detector mechanism for weft replenishin looms, a slide havin;r a movement. in a irection at right angles to the axis of the bobbin in the shuttle, and adapted to enter an opening thronvh the shuttle and to engage the filling on tile hohbin, and a second slide mounted on and movirg with said first mentioned slide, and a apted to engage the filling on the bobbin, and also have a movement m a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the first mentioned slide, and means for yieldingly moving the first mentioned slide to cause it. to enter the shuttle and engage the filling, and means to positively withdraw said slide from the shuttle.

In a filling detector mechanism for weft replenisliing looms, a slide having n rcciprociiting movement toward and nwiiy from the filling in the nctive shuttle, and adapted to enter nn openin through the shuttle and to engii the illm on the bohbin, and n second slide moilnt on and moi'- iitilg with said iii-st mentioned slide il ap and ted to enter an opening through the shuttle und to engage the filling on the bobbin, and also havin a. movement in the direction of the lengt i of the bobbin.

In a filling detector mechanism for weft replenisliing looms, carried on and movable with the lay, s. slide having a reciprocating movement toward and away from the lilling in the active shuttle, imd adapted to enter an opening through the shuttle and to engage the iillin on the bohbin, and e second slide mount on and moviitilg with said first. mentioned slide, and u npted to enter an openi through the shuttle and to engage the filling on the bobhin, and also having ai movement in the direction of the length of the bobbin.

A filling detector mechanism, comprising two adjacent members, both adapted to enter im opening in the shuttle and en e the filling, and means to move one of said members relative to the other, in the direction of the len h of the bobbin, to canse the o ration of t ie transferrin mechanism on t ie practical or substantie exhaustion of filling in the active shuttle.

A filling detector mechanism, compris ing two adjacent members, both adapted to enter an opening in the shuttle and engage the filling, and means to move one of said members relative to the other, in the direction of the length of the bobbin, and com nections intermediate said member and the weft ieplenishing mechanism, to cause the operation of the weft replenishing mechanisin on thc practical or substantial exhaustion of filling in the active shuttle.
