[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Circular machines.-Comprises a circular machine having double-acting cams and equal numbers of needles in both cylinder and dial, whereby tubular plain or rib fabric may be produced by ordinary circular knitting, or the machine may be oscillated to produce tubular, plain, or shogged rib fabrics of any desired width, fashioned or not. The cylinder cams, which resemble the locks of an ordinary flat machine with the addition of a switch cam 16, Fig. 3, comprise adjustable stitch cams 12, 13, central cams 14, 15 individually withdrawable against the action of springs 17, Fig. 5, by latches 18, having wedge shaped fingers 19 adapted to engage with bifurcated studs projecting from the cams, and fixed cams 12<1>, 13<1>, Fig. 3, which cause temporary arrest of the descent of the cylinder needles to ensure better stitch formation. The dial cams comprise fixed cams 22, 23, 24, a pivoted cam 26, and a withdrawable cam 25. When the cam 25 is in action, the dial needles are projected by the cams 25, 26 to knit in both directions of movement of the dial, but on withdrawing this cam, the needles engage behind and swing aside the cam 26 in one direction of movement and are not advanced ; during this movement, the dial may be shogged. The ends of the dial needles bear againsc a ring 28, which may be lifted for withdrawal of certain needles, a slot 27 being provided in the dial for manipulation of the needles.
