Abstract

A seam free stocking fabric comprises a series of pairs of courses of which one course consists of plain stitches and the following course consists of plain stitches alternating with tuck loops, the stitches in the second course being so much larger than those of the first course that the held loops 1 of the first course are enlarged at the expense of the remaining stitches of that course which are pulled straight as at 2 the tuck loops being periodically shifted course wise by one stitch. As shown, loops 1 are doubled back about the part 2 and the limbs of loop 1 are locked by the centre of the next loop 3 which is doubled back about a straight part 4 of yarn. Every eight (or four or 2) courses the pattern shifts one stitch course wise to form a transition point A, Fig. 1. As shown, a two feed circular knitting machine has latch needles 13 with jacks 14 having butts alternately at two levels over a quarter of the circumference of the cylinder and alternately at two higher levels over the circumference. The jacks 14 and hence needles 13 are selected by cams 20 controlled by a cam drum 19, the cams 20 being put into operation over the part of the circumference in which there are no corresponding butts. Plain knitting, As well as reciprocation knitting for the formation of the heel and toe, takes place at feed I whereas the courses of plain stitches and tuck loops are formed at feed II. The sinker cam 24 at feed II is radially movable and has guide surfaces 26, 27, which co-operate with sinkers having long and short butts respectively so that the long butt sinkers more normally but the short butt sinkers engage their webs under the yarn being fed. Thus the loops formed in this course are larger and the held loops of the previous course are pulled out to match at the expense of the remaining stitches in that course which disappear. Alternatively, machines have a single feed or more than two feeds may be used. Synthetic and mixed yarns of 7 to 100 denier may be used.
