Abstract

7231. Mills, J. A. March 23. Needles. - Double - hooked needles are employed in the knitting of fashioned ribbed fabrics for the purpose of changing from one kind of ribbed fabric to another or to plain fabric. In one form, applicable to a divided ribbed dial as described in Specification 14,436/09, two ordinary hooks and latches a, b, a<1>, b<1> are formed at the ends of a U-shaped piece of metal, provided with a single butt f, and with or without a bent steadying piece g. These needles are placed at the edges of the divided dial portions, the plain stems working in the part cut away to allow space for the requisite relative movement of the dial portions. In another form, applicable to machines of the type with two needle cylinders, one hook portion k is pivoted at n to the U-shaped stem o, the bottom portion q of which is so shaped that when the compound needle is raised above the needle line C, Fig. 8, the two loops 1, 2 are brought on to the right-hand needle stem, the hook h being turned down by a finger. The compound needle will then continue to knit as if it were an ordinary needle, until raised above the knitting line, as shown in Fig. 9, when the turned down hook h engages the thread 3, and is brought into knitting position on subsequent depression.
