Abstract
21,615. Cage, J. M., and L. A. Submarine Boat Co. Oct. 27. Submarine vessels.-Comprises means for supplying fresh air to the interior of a submarine for ventilating and respiratory purposes and also for driving the vessel, when submerged, by internal-combustion engines. The air-compressors 50 are connected by pipes 52, 53 with the high-pressure air flasks 26, 27, and the pipe 53 has a pipe 54 leading tu the low-pressure flasks 31 delivering to the low-pressure main 56 having reducing-valves 57, which deliver air to the interior of the vessel, when submerged, when the pressure falls to, say, 14 lb. per sq. in. Fig. 8 shows an automatic atmospheric air intake 60, the spring and piston controlled valve 61 normally supplying atmospheric air, and the float 69 in. the perforated chamber 70 holding the valve 66 open to raise the piston 64. When the vessel is submerged, the float 69 rises, closing the valve 66 and opening, by means of the lever 71, the valve 72, which opens the cylinder 63 to exhaust and allows the spring 62 to seat the valve 61. As soon as the pressure of air in the vessel falls, air is supplied for all purposes through the pipe line 56 and valves 57. The compressors are driven to make up deficiencies when the vessel is on the surface or awash.
