Actuating by pulsating fluid pressure; valves, arrangement of; relief devices. - Fuel is forced through the jet of a carburettor by a pump-plunger attached to a suction-actuated air-valve. The pump-plunger 75 is connected through a ball- and - socket joint 73 to a spring-loaded sleeve 31 attached to an air-valve 26 between the chambers 27, 28. The pump draws fuel from a glass vessel 87 communicating with the hydrocarbon supply through a pipe 94 and valve 99, which is actuated by the plunger 75 striking and forcing back the bevelled edge of the spindle 97. A spring- loaded non-return valve 54 prevents fuel from returning to the pump chamber. A similar valve 84 is placed in the suction passage. Grooves 69 in the pump barrel allow surplus fuel to escape, and prevent the formation of an air cushion. Excess fuel in the discharge passage returns by way of passages 105, 104 to the vessel 87 or to an outlet passage. The flow of fuel from the jet is controlled by a spring- loaded valve 56, the spindle 57 of which has a head 58, inside which is located an eccentric 62 carried by an adjustable shaft 63.
