Abstract

20,711. Orr, J. Oct. 8. Ballasting.-Comprises means for reducing the oscillation of ships in a seaway in which a load is applied to that side of the ship about to ascend. A tank 1, fitted athwartships, contains a buoyant structure 2 fitted with rollers 3 engaging rails 4 on the tank top. The structure 2 always tends to move to the higher side of the tank, and is held there by an electrically-actuated detent 7 during the major portion of the next oscillation, thereby retaining the water at the rising side of the ship. The electro-magnet 8 operating the detent is controlled by a pendulum switch.
