Abstract
5077. Birmingham Small Arms Co., and Norman, G. Feb. 27. Breech actions, sliding breech-block; breech actions, sliding barrel and breech-block. - Relates to rotary bolt-action rifles of the kind in which the breech bolt contains a hollow striker and the firing-spring, and consists in a special construction and arrangement of the rear closing-cap of the bolt, and of the head of the firing-pin. The cap has a rear part 12 which forms the abutment of the firing-spring, and a part-circular forward part 7 which screws into the bolt and which surrounds the striker for about two-thirds of its circumference. The cap and the striker are both held against rotation by lugs engaging longitudinal grooves in the body. In the rear of the cap, a buffer pin 29 may be fitted engaged by the firing-spring. The loose firing-head 18, Fig. 2, is keyed to the reduced forward end of the striker, and has a circumferential cam-groove 22 engaged by a lug 24 on the extractor or on the breech-bolt. This lug prevents the head from being blown back and also positively retracts the firing-pin during the opening rotation of the bolt.
