Abstract
695. Esplen, A. Jan. 10. Starting-engines. - The engine comprises a cylinder and two pistons 4 moving between a stationary central abutment 8 and end abutments 9. The pistons are loosely mounted on the rod and are provided with projecting shoulders, which engage spaced rings 6, 7 held in position by tubular sleeves fitting outside the rod. The centre and end spaces of the cylinder are put into communication with the atmosphere or a vacuum supply 15 connected to a steam condenser or other chamber, by means of pipes 16, 20 connected to a chest 2 containing a mannally-controlled distributing- valve 3 and a lift-valve 17 provided with a plunger and roller actuated by a cam-surface 22 on the valve 3. When the valve 3 is in its central position, the space between the pistons 4 communicates with the vacuum and the cylinder ends with the atmosphere, and the valve-gear is held in its central position. When the valve 3 is moved to the right or left, air is supplied to the space between the pistons 4, a vacuum is produced in the right or left hand end of the cylinder, and the right or left hand piston is moved to engage the corresponding collar 7 to move the main gear one way or the other. The pistons 4 and rings 7 are provided with non-metallic contact-surfaces.
