Valves and valve seats, arrangement of; valvegear.-A double-acting pump has a single piston working in two cylinders, and suction valves connected to delivery valves in pairs. As shown in Fig. 2, the piston c operating in the chambers a, a' receives its motion from the shaft j. The pump is provided with two suction valves k, k<1> and two delivery valves m, m<1>. The suction valve of one chamber and the delivery valve of the other are mounted on the same rod p or p<1>. These valves are placed vertically to avoid the accumulation of grit &c. on the seats, and the valve seats are provided with linings of rubber or soft metal. The valves are kept in contact with their seats by small springs r. The valverod p is actuated by the cam z and roller y, the roller being kept in contact with the cam by a spring v. A second roller y' operates a short sliding rod 6, carrying a rack 5, which engages with a toothed sector on the transverse shaft 9. A similar arrangement at the other end of this rod operates the valve-rod p<1>. In a modification, the transverse shaft 9 is dispensed with, and the rod p<1> is operated by a cam similar to z, placed on a countershaft similar in position to j. In another modification, the cams may be replaced by grooved disks. The above-described improvements relating to the valves and their actuating - mechanism may also be used in single-acting pump.
