Abstract

20,949. Stamm, H. May 3, [Convention date]. Breech actions, sliding breech-block. - Relates to straight-pull rifles of the kind in which the bolt is operated by a non-rotary sleeve connected thereto by screwthreads and prevented from rotating when the breech is open by the firing-pin, the lug of which engages, under the influence of the firing-spring, in a notch in the back of the breech-bolt. The invention consists mainly in special means for coupling the cocking-piece and the operating-sleeve to the breech-bolt when the breech is open, and for placing the firing- pin in a safe position. The operating - sleeve 4 has external ribs 8 which, when the breech is closed, fit into corresponding grooves in the breech body and prevent rotation. When the breech is opened, the ribs on the sleeve are disengaged from the grooves, and the locking-lugs on the bolt enter the grooves, thus holding the bolt against rotation. To prevent the sleeve from rotating when the breech is opened, it is coupled to the breech-bolt by the cocking-piece 20 and by a special spring catch 42. The lug 21 of the cocking-piece enters a slot 31, Figs. 3, 4, and 9, in the sleeve 4 and is pressed by the firing-spring into engagement with a notch 23, Fig. 4, at the rear of the bolt. The three parts are thus held against rotation. A spring catch 42, Fig. 6, is also provided to hold the sleeve and bolt against relative rotation. This catch is pivoted to the sleeve and has a nose 42 which enters a recess in the bolt. The catch is released by the breech casing 3 as the sleeve approaches its forward position. The firing-pin 16 is mounted in the non-rotary cocking-piece by a screw-thread and can be rotated through 180 degrees by means of a thumb-piece 26 to retract the point of the firing-pin to a position in which it cannot reach the cartridge. A spring detent 28, Fig. 3, holds the thumb-piece in either of its adjusted positions. The sleeve 18, which forms the rear abutment of the firing- spring 17 and a guide for the firing-pin 16, is screwed into the breech-block and locked by the lug 21 of the cocking-piece, which engages a groove 30, Fig. 3, in its under surface.
