Combined or convertible solid-fuel and gas stoves. -In open fire-places having a pit C in the rear of the hearth fitted with a liner B and a cover-plate E, as described for example in Specification 26,131/11, a gas-fire a is hinged so that it may be raised vertically for use or turned into the pit when out of use. The gas-fire has a slag-wool packing d behind the fire-back c, and is carried by a plate g which is pivoted at f and covers the space at the rear of the plate E when lowered. The gas-fire, when raised, rests on the rear of the plate E, and has a lug j on a swing plate i which closes the inlet to the burner e when the fire is lowered.
