Vehicle-window opening and closing apparatus. - Relates to operating - apparatus for sliding sashes in which the sash, when in the raised position, is moved inwards or outwards over the weather-rail, when the sash is being opened or closed respectively. When the sash 18<a> is raised, pins 20 thereon engage wedges 18 slidably mounted on the window frame and force the sash outwards over the weather rail until the pins 20 engage notches 19 in the wedges 18. If the sash is then slightly lowered, the pins 20 drag down the wedges 18 against the action of springs 22 until the rabbets on the lower rail of the sash and on the weather rail come into engagement. During this movement, the wedges are stopped by the abutments 23 which cause the disengagement of the pins 20 and notches 19, so that the wedgesreturn to their original position under the. action of the springs 22. If the sash is now slightly raised, springs 17 force the sash inwards into its proper position for being lowered. The sash is raised and lowered by an endless chain 4 secured to the lower rail of the sash and passing over chainwheels 5, 12. The wheel 12 is carried by a spindle 11 which passes through a ratchet-wheel 6 fixed in a casing 8, the cover 10 of which is rotatable and is fixed to the spindle 11. The cover 10 is provided with a handle 9, and carries a spring pawl 7 which is released by a bellcrank 16 operated by a spring press-button 14 housed in the handle 9.
