Abstract

5400. Smith, J. S. March 4. Variable - speed belt gearing.-An expanding pulley is carried by a shaft pivoted about an engine shaft and driven therefrom by chain gearing. The pulley C moves between the sides H, I, of a fixed wedgeshaped frame, so that it expands or contracts automatically as its shaft A is raised or lowered, while the belt P by which power is transmitted is simultaneously tensioned by the movement of the shaft. The shaft A is carried by an arm B which is pivoted on the engine shaft N and is operated by the rotation of a rod J which screws into the arm and abuts against a fixed bracket L. As shown in Fig. 4, the rod carries a collar which rests on the bracket L, and the lower end of the rod projects beyond the bracket, so that, when a pedal X is depressed, the rod J is raised, and the gear is rapidly lowered to a free-engine position.
