Abstract
164,889. Patterson, W. J. March 27, 1920. Variable-speed ratchet gearing. - In ratchet gearing for motor vehicles an oscillating lever having an arm of variable effective length recip - rocates a device which rotates a shaft continuously by means of screw rods and one-way clutches. A right-angled control lever A, B, Fig. 1, adjusts a pin D in a slot in the oscillating lever E so as to impart a variable reciprocating movement to a framework N, Fig. 2, which slides in fixed guides M. Helical grooves 0<1> in the non-rotating screw rods 0 oscillate the innermembers of one-way clutches S, which are prevented from moving axially by thrust bearings in a fixed framework U. A gear wheel T on the shaft P meshes with gear wheels forming the external members of the one-way clutches S.
