Abstract

1551. Green, W. Jan. 20. Lift valves; hinged valves; repairing. - In order to renew a valve head or washer in water and steam cocks and valves without interfering with the supply, the valve head, which may be a thimble-shaped member c<4>, Fig. 1, on the end of the screwed operating-spindle c and fitted with a washer c<3>, is first clamped to its seat by lateral set-screws b, Fig. 2; the detachable outlet a<7> is then removed, the second valve head is inserted on the spindle end, the outlet a<7> is replaced, and the screws b withdrawn. The first valve head then falls down into the nozzle a<7> and the second valve is closed down, whereupon the nozzle is removed to take away the first valve head. Fig. 7 shows a hinged valve c<4> which is clamped to its seat by the operating- screw c; the suspension pin c<5> with the cover e<2> being then removed and a second valve, shown in dotted lines, inserted. The cover e<2> is replaced with the pin c<5> projecting out of the cover; the spindle c is slacked back, the first valve drops down into the outlet a<7>, and the second valve is pushed down into position by the pin c<5>, which is then screwed into the cover e<2>. The first valve is removed as already described.
