Specification of Letters Patent.

- To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIAN E. STARK, a citizen of the United States, V residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flushin Devices for Water-Closets, of which the ollowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof. j
My invention relates to animproved seatoperated closet-flushing device and has for its main objects, to improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character; and also contemvantageous details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts of the improved device, as-will be more fully de scribed hereinafter, and'pointed out in the claims. e a I j These together with such objects as may hereinafter appear, or are incident to my invention, I attain by means of the construction illustrated in'preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring now more particularly to Figs. 3 and 4, it will be seen that the casing 8 has its upper portion 8 disposed within the opening 13, and is provided with a chamber connected by "28 having outlets 17 leading to the flushing passage 12 in the rim, said upper portion provided below. said outlet with the valve seat 18 and passage-way 2 1 and above said outlets with an externally and internally threaded rim portion 19 projecting upwardly a short distance above the rim, the
external threads being engaged by a securing nut 20 and the internal threads by an upper cap' 21 designed to close the upper end of the chamber 28 and to serve as a guide for the stem 22 of the valve 23. This stem has its upper projectin end engaged by a plug 34, which is threac ed into a boss 35 formed in the seat hinge bracket 15, said plug being adjustable in said boss to vary the travel of the stem and having its upper slot ted end engaged exteriorly by a closure lock nut 36, preferably of an ornamental design. The normal position of the stem is that shown in Fig. 3.
The lowerdepending socket portion 8 of the casing 8 is provided with a chamber 30 and at the upper end of said chamber is a valve seat 25 and port 26 therein, said port 1 adapted to be closed by a valve 27 simultaneously with the lifting of the valve 23 to open the passage-way 24, and vice versa.
As illustrated in Figs. 3 and 1, the water 1 supplypipe'leads into the chamber 30, while,
in turn, the reservoir pipe 9 communicates laterally with the main chamber 29, which is located intermediate the chambers 28 and ervoir suitably mounted above the bowl 6 I and designedto receive a supply of water 30, through a laterally directed connection 31, the upper wall of said connection preferably merging with an annular flange 32 which carries a gasket 33 that is designed to take against the lower face of the rim exber 29 and pipe 9 to the tank, whereupon as the seat rises to the position shown in Fig. 3, the valves 27 and 23 respectively close and open, insuring a flow of water from the tank 5, through the main chamber 29, passage-way 24 and outlets 17, to the flushing passage 12 to flush the bowl in the usual manner.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 8 and 4, which clearly illustrate the component parts of the valves 23 and 27, it will be noted that the head 37 of the former is hollowed to provide in its lower face an annular recess 39 in which is seated a washer 4O constituting the face of the valve, and to provide a relatively smaller diameter-edsocket interiorly threaded at 41 to receive an externally threaded tubular sleeve 38 which is flanged at 38 in order to maintain the said valve washer 40 in its seat when the sleeve is wrenched home into the socket.
'Mounted in the head of the lower or inlet valve 27, with a view of taking against the valve seat 25 and thereby close the port 26 leading from the chamber 30 to the main chamber 29 when the seat is in raised position, is an annular washer 42 constituting the face of the valve 27, the stem of the latter being indicated by the numeral 43'. Closing the lower end of the chamber 30 is a closure cap 44, which also carries a coil spring 45 designed to normally yieldingly.

In order that the effect of the spring 45 may be transmitted to the upper valve 27 to unseat it upon the closing of the port 26, I provide an intermediate rod or stem 47 whose reduced lower end portion has a threaded engagement interiorly with the valve stem 43 and which is flanged whereby to position in the head of the valve 27 the washer 42, through which latter the portion 48 extends. The upper portion 49 of the stem 47 has a loose fit within the guide sleeve 38 and is formed just below it with a circular portion or flange 50 seated in a correspondingly formed recess 51 located in the head of said sleeve.
From the foregoing, the simplicity and compactness achieved in the arrangement of the various parts of my invention, and their effectiveness in operation will be readily apparent by those skilled in the art. From an inspection particularly of Fig. 4 it will furthermore be clear that upon removal of the upper and lower closure caps 21 and 44, the outlet and inlet valves may be withdrawn for renewal or repair without dismantling the casing or disturbing its arrangement with the flushing rim of the closet bowl. By the arrangement of the valve parts, as shown, eflective and positive valve action is obtained, involved mechanism being entirely may be removed subsequent upon the withdrawal of the cap 21.
hat I claim is 1. The combination of a closet bowl having a shelf provided interiorly with a walled flushing passage and formed therethrough with a vertical straight-way opening intersecting said passage, a flushing valve casing having its outlet portion constructed and arranged in said opening for direct communication with said passage, valvular means for said outlet portion movable in said casing, said means provided with an extension, relatively adjustable securing means on said casing for securing the casing in'the opening and closing the ends of said opening, and valve actuating means mounted on said shelf whereby to actuate said extension.
2. The combination of a closet bowl formed integrally with an outwardlyprojecting rim, said rim having a substantially horizontal walled flushing passage';centrally disposed therein and an opening'extending vertically through said passage and said rim low said rim and an upper. outlet body portion disposed in said opening for direct lateral communication with said passage, said basal and upper casing portions having a closure flange and a detachable securing nut designed to surround the ends of the opening and to cooperate with opposite face portions of the rim above and below thejuneture of said opening and said passage.
3. The combination with a closet bowl provided with a rearwardly projecting hori zontal shelf having centrally within it a walled flushing passage, the upper and lower walls of said shelf formed therethrough with co-axial openings above and below said passage, of a flushing mechanism therefor comprising a valve casing embodying a basal inlet portion below said shelf and an upper portion having a closed top and a side outlet providing direct communication with said flushing passage, said upper portion insertible upwardly to extend through said said shelf independently of, ,said casing and 7 said flushing passage.
4. The combination of a closet bowl having a shelf provided interiorly with a horizontally disposed Walled flushing passage and formed therethrough with a vertical straight-Way opening terminally intersecting said passage and its Walls, a flushing valve casing having inlet and outlet portions, the latter being constructed and arranged for direct lateral communication with said passage, valvular means for controlling said portions and including a stem extending up- Wardly beyond said shelf, securing means on said casing for securing the casing in the opening and closingthe ends of said opening, closure means for said casing comprising end members arranged to position said valvular means, and a stem actuating member carried by said shelf rearwardly of said casing.
5. The combination of a closet bowl having a rearwardly extending integral shelf provided interiorly with a Walled flushing passage and formed therethrough With a vertical straight-Way opening intersecting the passage and its walls, a flushing valve casing in said opening having valvular means therein and an outlet portion arranged to communicate with said passage at a point intermediate said walls, and an actuating member for said valvular means, said member carried by said shelf independently of said casing.
