Abstract

22,687. Warsop, T., and Wigley, G. April 5, 1913. Parachutes.-A parachute, connected to an aviator or to a flying-machine, is expanded by the admission of compressed air to a bag B placed below the parachute envelope A. The bag may be arranged to burst when the parachute is opened, or it may be perforated so as to enable the air to escape and inflate the parachute. Cylinders E connected by a pipe N contain the compressed air, which is admitted through pipes F, L and a valve to a cylinder G containing a piston H. The piston is connected to a pipe C which connects with the bag B, and the parachute, pipe C, and bag are normally stored in the cylinder G. When the valve is opened, the piston H rises until restrained by chains I, the parachute is expelled, and air passes through the pipe C to the bag B. The piston may pass out of the cylinder, and in that case the pipe C passes through the piston and is fastened to the base of the cylinder a branch from the pipe C being provided with a valve so that the air first expels the piston and parachute and then, the valve closing, fills the bag B. A coupling K between the pipes F, L may be disconnected so that the aviator may strap the apparatus to his back by means of the pipe F.
