Counters affording several rates of actuation. -Two-rate mechanism for an electric or other meter consists of a differential gear, one side member of which is driven by the meter; the other side member and the planet member drive two gear trains. As shown in Fig. 2, two sleeves each with a crown and toothed wheel j, i and l, m are loosely mounted on the shaft c of the first wheel of one counting-train, the shaft carrying a pin e with a planetwheel f. The wheel i is geared with the meter spindle, and the wheel m with the second counting- train. A lever r can be operated by an electromagnet to engage with either of two wheels p, q, so that when the wheel q is locked, the meter drives the lower train through the wheels i, j, e, and when the wheel p is locked, the second train is driven through the wheels i, j, e, l, m. A pointer operated by the lever r indicates which train is in gear.
