Counters affording several rates of actuation. -An electric meter registers the difference between the actual consumption and a fictitious consumption at a constant rate; for this purpose it is provided with means such as a clock, an electric motor, or auxiliary windings to produce an opposing movement or torque. Two counters may he provided, excess being registered on one and deficiency on the other, or a single counter driven in opposite directions may he used. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the meter 1 drives one wheel 3 of a differential gear, the other wheel 4 being driven at a constant speed by a clock 2 or electric motor; the planet wheel 5 is connected by gearing (not shown) with a worm 6 which drives one of two wheels 7, 8 having pawls 9, 10 to drive ratchet-wheels 11, 12 connected with two trains 13, 14. When the speed of the motor is less than that of the clock 2, the train 13 is operated, and registers the load on which a rebate is allowed to the consumer. In the arrangement shown in Fig., 2, a reversible motor 15 is provided with shunt field windings 16 producing a constant opposing torque, and a series field winding 17, a worm driving either of two trains as before but without the differential gear. The trains 13, 14 may indicate the sum to be refunded or charged above the flat rate, and another registering-apparatus may be provided in addition to or instead of the counters to register the nett or total amount to be paid.
