Abstract
19,729. Kerr, A. Aug. 29. Valves closing with rush of fluid; valves controlled from a distance.-A device for closing a boiler or engine stop valve in the event of the steam-pipe bursting is actuated hydraulically and provided with means to enable the valve to be manually operated from a distance and also with means for applying a brake to the prime mover. The apparatus comprises a stop valve b adapted to be actuated by a screwed spindle j<7> and also by fluid pressure acting on a piston i<1> coupled to the valve spindle by a lever j. The space beneath the piston is supplied with water from an elevated tank e, while the space above the piston is supplied with water under boiler pressure admitted through a check valve h<2>, a hand-actuated balanced piston valve m<3>, and an automatically-actuated auxiliary slide valve k, the pipe lines being maintained full of water by water from an elevated tank d admitted through a hand-actuated valve o normally held open by a spring. The auxiliary valve k is actuated by a piston f<1>, one side of which is acted on by water at boiler pressure admitted through a pipe h', the other side being acted on by water at steam-pipe pressure admitted through a pipe g and obtained by condensing steam in a coil g<2>, which is adjustably connected to the pipe line by a springy pipe or by parts sliding through stuffing-boxes. The pipe g is provided with a series of valves for releasing the pressure behind the piston to close the main valve. One of these valves is itself operated by a piston, actuated by fluid pressure derived from a non - freezing liquid contained in elevated tanks and controlled by cocks on the pipe line. The hand-actuated valve is used to interrupt the supply of water pressure and allows the main valve to be operated by hand and is adapted to be automatically opened, when normal pressure conditions obtain, by a tapper f<5> actuated by the piston f<1> engaging the lever m<1> which is coupled by a pin-and-slot mechanism to one of the release cocks to ensure that it is closed when the valve m<3> is open. A catch m<4> normally holds the valve m<3> open. The brakeactuating apparatus, which is under the same control as the boiler stop valve, may be omitted, and comprises an hydraulically actuated piston z<1> coupled to the brake block through a lever w<0>.
