Abstract
123,942. Scotts' Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., and Anderson, J. P. Oct. 22, 1918. Regulating.-Relates to an emergency valve for turbines which automatically shuts off the steam supply in the event of the failure of the forcedlubrication system, and which can also be operated by hand and by governor. The emergency valve b cannot open under pressure of steam entering at the point a<1> until the pressures at both sides of the piston c on the valve stem are equalized, this being quickly done by opening a pin valve e in a by-pass d. A hand-wheel f regulates the extent to which the valve b may open by adjusting a sleeve f<1> against a shoulder b<2> on the valve spindle. A handle b<2> serves for hand-manipulation of the valve b. For automatically closing the valve b, the space c<1> above the piston c is connected by a pipe and a valve h to a pipe w leading to the hot-well tank, the unbalanced pressure on the lower side of the piston c thereupon closing the valve b. The valve h is secured to a heavy ram k supported by oil from the forcedlubrication system, or from the gravity tank n, admitted under the ram by a pipe l<1>. In the event of the oil pressure falling below a predetermined limit, the ram k falls and moves the valve h so as to connect the pipes w, j, thereby closing the emergency valve b. The closure may also be effected (a) by moving a cock r by a handlever s so as to connect the pipe l<1> with a drain pipe m<1>, and (b) by the action of the high or low pressure turbine governors q, q<1> tripping detents v, v<1> and allowing valves t, t<1> to fall and shut off the pressure oil. Instead of the heavy ram k, a light piston may be employed, pressed down by a spring or balance weights.
